Protected Disclosures in the Public Interest Bill 2012

To date, the protection of whistleblowers in the employment context has been dealt with through a range of legislation and on a sector by sector basis. However, this new bill applies across all sectors. Its aim is to provide for the protection of workers who make disclosures of certain information in the public interest. On publishing the bill, Minister Howlin referred to the obligation on employers to put effective internal mechanisms in place to deal with whistleblowing and employers should be ready to address this when the bill is enacted.
