Corporate Social Responsibility Update

Assisting in the community

Our team enjoyed joining the 10,000 people who helped clean up Limerick on Good Friday with Team Limerick Clean-Up4. We were delighted to continue our support of Pieta House on 12th January 2018, as one of the sponsors of the Metis Music for Mental Health Gig and then more recently supporting the Darkness Into Light walk in Dublin, Cork and Limerick. One of our trainee solicitors, Aoife Coughlan, participated in the Law Society’s, Habitat Group, building project in Malawi for two weeks in March. Caroline Murphy, secretary, and her family again supported Milford Hospice by raising funds through organising a Mike Denver concert.

International Women’s Day

The global theme for International Women’s Day 2018 was #PressforProgress and we celebrated International Women’s Day across a variety of events. Sandy Lindsay, Communication Consultant, was guest speaker at our Afternoon Tea at The Westin Dublin on 9th March. Sandra Egan, Partner, organised a HOMS Solicitors celebration on Thursday 8th March 2018 and we were also pleased to see Sandra profiled in the Limerick Leader’s feature for International Women’s Day.

Talent Development

Continuing with our talent development programme, we extend congratulations to all of the graduates from the Smart Choice Leadership Program run by Ingenium Training & Consultancy, in partnership with University of Limerick. Our graduates to date include Pat McInerney, Anna Owens, Kevin Doughan, Michael Murphy, Lisa Killeen, Sean Fitzgerald, Eadaoin Jackson, Rachael O’Shaughnessy and Jacci Fox.

Supporting Business and the Marketplace

George Kennedy, our Corporate & Commercial Partner, was delighted to support entrepreneurs through CorkBIC’s Entrepreneur Experience® in May 2018. The event was a unique opportunity for 24 Emerging Entrepreneurs to gain access and advice from 24 of Ireland’s most successful Business leaders over 24 hours. The 2018 Entrepreneur Experience® took place in Ballymaloe, County Cork on 15th and 16th May 2018.

Harry Fehily, Michael Murphy, Anna Owens and Aoife Skehan have delivered a series of presentations to various insurers and the Insurance Ireland Institute on ‘Creative Legal Solutions to Challenging Financial Lines Claims’ and ‘Giving Evidence as an Insurance Company Witness’.

Anna Owens, Senior Associate, Defence Litigation Unit, spoke about her role as a solicitor at University of Limerick’s Careers Evening and Orla Donovan, Assistant Solicitor, also took time out to speak to School of Law UL students as part of their Street Law orientation training.

Sean Fitzgerald, Solicitor and Health & Safety expert, addressed @ConstructSummit #rebuild18 on protecting the safety of employees in the workplace.

We were delighted to recently host the 40th Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) ADR Forum on Compulsory Purchase Order arbitrations at our Limerick office.

Carrying on the theme of seminars and updates, companies were advised at our recent GDPR Breakfast Briefings in Dublin and Limerick to finalise their GDPR compliance strategies before 25th May 2018.

We also hosted our Insurance Conference in London on 16th March to celebrate the opening of our London office. Key personnel within the Irish and UK insurance claims market were present at the Grange Tower Bridge for an engaging series of presentations and workshops on the theme of ‘The Financial Lines and Casualty Claims Environment in Ireland’. The Conference was opened by Dr Hugh O’Donnell, CEO of Ingenium Training and Consulting, and we were privileged to benefit from the insights provided by John Murray, former Chief Justice and former Judge of the European Court of Justice, who moderated the conference. Robert Kennedy and Donal Creaton, Partners, and Michael Murphy and Wayne Finn, Senior Associate Solicitors, all presented. The Conference was closed by Dr. O’Donnell, who summarised the various presentations, and Harry Fehily, who thanked all present for their ongoing support.

The HOMS Solicitors Fittest Company Challenge again took place this year supporting and encouraging employee well-being and fitness inside our own offices as well as in other companies. More information on the event and our pro bono HOMS FCC training app can be viewed here.
