HOMS Solicitors were delighted to be breakfast sponsors and attend the Insurance Ireland Anti-Fraud Conference held at Croke Park on 12th October 2016. In attendance from the firm were Robert Kennedy, Partner, Donal Creaton, Partner and Tríona Walsh, Associate Solicitor.

Insurance Ireland represent 95% of the domestic market and more than 80% of Ireland’s international life insurance market. Mr. Ken Norgrove, President of Insurance Ireland, gave the opening address. The conference, which was MC’d by Derek Trower, Chairman, Insurance Ireland Anti-Fraud Forum & Head of Specialist & Complex Claims, RSA, then heard from experts operating in the area including Adele Sumner, Head of Fraud Intelligence & Strategic Development for the Counter Fraud Unit, RSA Insurance UK, who gave insight into the methods adopted in the UK market to tackle the issue.

Later in the morning, there was a panel discussion on compliance and data protection which included a lively debate involving, Michael Horan, Non-Life Insurance Manager, Insurance Ireland, John O’Keeffe, Criminologist & Forensic Psychologist, John Magee, Partner William Fry, and Dearbhail McDonald, Group Business Editor for Independent News & Media.

Insurance ConferenceThere were also relevant and insightful contributions on the topic from the attendees at the conference including from representatives for the Data Protection Commissioner’s Office, members of the Insurance Ireland anti-fraud forum and our own Donal Creaton, from the defence solicitor’s perspective.

The event was informative and forward-thinking, exploring the cultural reasons behind insurance fraud, the issues that may be hindering insurance fraud detection and prosecution, and examining possible avenues to overcome these difficulties. Insurance fraud is an issue which directly results in higher insurance premiums and affects all policyholders.
