I chose the Graduate Internship Programme at Holmes O’Malley Sexton because of its reputation and it certainly has lived up to this! I am currently working as an intern in commercial property and insolvency. The experience I am gaining is second to none. My tasks vary on a day to day basis so no day is ever the same – to name a few, I work in transactions involving sales and purchases of commercial property, receivership matters, registrations of lands and properties, research of various property matters, the list goes on. Not only have I gained invaluable experience, I have become a productive member of the team. I have built strong relationships with clients and I am heavily involved in various transactions which has helped me to develop confidence and experience.
Outside of the work sphere, I have been invited to attend many different events on behalf of Holmes O’Malley Sexton and have had the opportunity to meet and get to know clients and businesses who work closely with us, the most recent of which was the Peter McVerry business breakfast and different events that the University of Limerick have hosted. It is perhaps the atmosphere around the office that I like the most. Despite it being a big firm, everyone is very friendly and always willing to help. In addition to this aspect, the culture of the firm is attractive and admirable in that normal working hours are adhered to as much as possible and a work/life balance is possible. I would recommend the firm to anyone looking to gain experience and further their legal career.
Melissa Regan, Graduate Intern
A graduate internship at HOMS Solicitors is the perfect chance for graduates to get an insight into the work of a leading Irish law firm, gain invaluable advice and help set goals for yourself in the future, in pursuit of qualifying as a solicitor.
Unlike other leading law firms’ four-week internships, an internship at HOMS Solicitors is for nine months.
I spent my time working in plaintiff litigation. I gained an insight and great understanding of this practice area. On a practical level, I was given both considerable responsibility and magnificent support from my supervising solicitor.
The internship is varied and every day presents exciting new challenges and opportunities. The programme teaches us core skills and this is coupled with patience and dedication from our mentors in the office. I soon learned the necessary skills of a good solicitor.
A great feature of the firm is its open, friendly culture and strong sense of community that exists amongst staff. There is a very evident open-door policy together with the friendly, approachable nature of all staff – from secretaries to junior solicitors to partners – which in turn promotes exceptional training and learning opportunities.
HOMS Solicitors invest in their corporate social responsibility and have a number of initiatives designed to safeguard the physical and mental health and well-being of employees. All staff are encouraged to maintain a healthy work-life balance. From offering reduced rates for local gyms, lunchtime runs and walks, to healthy eating in the office, the firm really encouraged an active lifestyle which is a great outlet while working in the challenging legal environment.
At the end of my internship, I had gained a real sense of what life as a trainee at HOMS Solicitors would be like and was lucky enough to secure a training contract with the firm for 2019.
